Over the past 30 years, some 2 billion people have moved from the countryside to the city. While much of the Americas and Europe were already urbanized by the late 1980s, more recent internal migrations in Africa and Asia have dramatically changed the places that people call home. Today, more than half of the planet lives in cities.
