U.S. retail spending increased year-over-year in June (excluding automotive), according to Mastercard SpendingPulse, which measures in-store and online retail sales across all forms of payment. Rising prices, particularly for necessities such as food and fuel, were a contributing factor (numbers reflect nominal spending, not adjusted for inflation). Discretionary spending drove growth across the fashion-forward sectors in June, and with summer in full swing, consumers continued to spend on travel.
