Hard Numbers: India's caseload surge, death toll undercount, Trump's corona approval, and NYC's cleaner air

25: Amid coronavirus lockdowns that have brought New York City to a near standstill, the city has seen a 25 percent decrease in air pollution in recent weeks.

17,000: As India's government moved to ease social distancing restrictions this week, allowing some agricultural and industrial workers to return to work, officials recorded the country's largest single-day spike in COVID-19 cases, pushing the national caseload above 17,000. But given India's spotty testing regimen, the number of COVID-19 cases is likely way higher than that.

54: More than half of Americans – some 54 percent – give President Trump "negative marks" for his handling of the coronavirus crisis, compared to 72 percent of Americans surveyed who say their governors have handled the outbreak well, according to a new Washington Post-University of Maryland poll.

28,000: Over the last month, official death tallies from some of the hardest-hit countries have undercounted at least 28,000 likely COVID-19 deaths, according to a new investigation by The New York Times. The analysis focuses on 11 countries, including Spain, France, Indonesia, and Turkey.
