Graphic Truth: World on Fire! Why?

It's not quite 1968, true, but the past few months have seen an extraordinary outburst of popular protests in all corners of the world. In some places, protesters are mainly demanding more political freedoms. In others, they are sick and tired of corruption and unemployment and want to throw the old guard out. Here's a map of the locations, and primary causes, of recent unrest around the world.

Angela Merkel was elected chancellor of Germany on November 22, 2005, becoming the first woman to hold that job. During that time Merkel was arguably the most powerful woman in the world, presiding over one of its largest economies for four terms in the Bundesregierung. Twenty years on, the anniversary is a reminder of how singular her breakthrough remains. It’s still the exception when a woman runs a country.
