Can Americans still trust the Supreme Court? In this latest clip from GZERO World with Ian Bremmer, Yale legal scholar and New York Times Magazine staff writer Emily Bazelon examines why confidence in the Court has declined in recent years and whether the judiciary can continue serving as a check on presidential power
Bazelon points to major rulings on abortion, voting rights, and presidential immunity that have made the Court appear increasingly political to many Americans. Yet she argues that the judiciary has also remained one of the strongest institutional constraints on the Trump administration, particularly when it comes to election disputes and executive overreach.
"If Trump does something that's blatantly transparently illegal, the justices are going to feel, I think institutionally, that it's important for them to stop it," Bazelon says.
Watch the conversation as Ian and Emily discuss the Supreme Court's legitimacy crisis and whether America's judicial guardrails are stronger than many people believe.
