DEMOCRACIA IN DECLINE?

The latest report on Latin American attitudes towards democracy has just been published (in Spanish) by Chilean pollster Latinobarometro, and we’ll cut to the chase: things aren’t looking good. After eight consecutive years of declines, the percentage of the region’s people who say democracy is “preferable” to authoritarianism now languishes at just 48 percent, the lowest level registered since 2001. Above is a look at how attitudes towards representative government have changed, by country, over the past decade.
