Over the past two decades, the appeal of authoritarianism has risen substantially in a number of countries. This graphic shows how support for the idea of a “strongman” leader has changed in key democracies (some of which are now only partial democracies) during that period.

The surge first began when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu formed a coalition with far-right leaders Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben-Gvir, and accelerated after the attacks against Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, by the Gaza-based militant group Hamas.
