During the height of the European migrant crisis in 2015 and 2016, more than a million asylum seekers, refugees, and economic migrants from North Africa, Syria, and South Asia sought shelter in Europe. Their arrival has changed politics in Europe, giving rise to anti-migrant backlashes in a number of countries.
