A New York Times investigation recently revealed an expansive network of secret prisons operated by the Syrian government, using torture and executions to stamp out opposition to President Bashar al-Assad. But similar approaches have also been used by the US-supported government in neighboring Iraq, where security forces have "disappeared" large numbers of Sunni residents suspected of having connections to former ISIS fighters. Journalist Ben Taub of The New Yorker magazine explains.
