HARD NUMBERS

33,000: In 2017, the US resettled just 33,000 refugees, making it the first year since the adoption of the 1980 Refugee Act that the country resettled fewer refugees than the rest of the world. “Resettled refugees” are those who apply for refugee status before entering their destination country.

212: Who has the world’s tallest statue? When Chinese officials made changes to the base of the Spring Temple Buddha that raised its height from 208 meters to 210 meters, Indian authorities announced that the statue of 17th century warrior King Shiv Smarak, still under construction on reclaimed land in the Arabian Sea off Mumbai, would be extended to 212 meters. That’s more than double the height of the (real) Statue of Liberty.

62: A poll conducted in June found that 62 percent of Brazilians aged 16-24 would leave the country if they could.

47: A new Gallup poll found that just 47 percent of US adults said they were “extremely proud” to be American, down from 70 percent in 2003. It’s the first time this answer has garnered less than a majority.
