President Donald Trump’s sweeping new global tariffs took effect on Thursday, slapping 90 countries with rates as high as 50%. The move marks a dramatic escalation in US protectionism, pushing America’s trade barriers up to levels not seen since the Great Depression.


And it's not over yet. Deadlines still loom for two of Washington’s biggest trading partners, Mexico and China, as well as on India, which Trump is punishing for its purchases of Russian oil (see more on that here). He also announced, without specifics, an upcoming tariff of 100% on semiconductors made by companies that are not “building” in the US.
