Hard numbers: Hamas seeks new role for its forces in Gaza, New estimate of Russian casualties in Ukraine, Rwanda sues the UK, & More

10,000: The number of Hamas officers that the militant group reportedly wants to incorporate into the US-backed Palestinian administration for Gaza, in the form of a police force. This move could act as a workaround for Hamas’ disarmament, which is a key condition of the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire. Israel will likely oppose this move, especially if it allows the militant group to maintain its weapons.

What We’re Watching: Fallout from Minneapolis killing, Xi purges military leader, Israel recovers final hostage

New Minneapolis shooting sparks some GOP backlash

On Saturday, 50,000 people took to the freezing Minneapolis streets to demand Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s exit from the city, according to organizers. But one protester never made it back home, as an ICE agent shot and killed Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse, while he was on the ground. Pretti had brought a handgun, but was disarmed before he was shot. The moment was captured on video. Some Republican lawmakers – including a few who seldom speak out against the Trump administration – are calling for an investigation. Even the NRA criticized federal prosecutors’ move to blame Pretti for being armed, citing his legal right as a gun owner. The situation is still evolving: Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, a Democrat, called in the National Guard on Saturday, a move that could theoretically pit law enforcement groups against one another. There’s also legal movement: A judge is set to hear arguments today over whether the ICE operation in Minneapolis is legal.

Hard Numbers: UK greenlights Chinese mega embassy, Australia advances gun control law after Bondi Beach massacre, Iran unleashes post-protest crackdown, Costa Rica’s right-wingers set to remain in power

600,000: The square footage of a new Chinese mega embassy slated for construction in London. (That’s 56,000 square meters for you non Imperial measurers.) London approved the project despite warnings from both local and US politicians that the building could be used for spying. The decision also comes right before Prime Minister Keir Starmer visits Beijing next week – he’ll be the first UK leader to do so since 2018.

Will Iran’s protests bring down the regime?

For over two weeks now, Iranians have been pouring into the streets in the largest demonstrations the country has seen since the 2022 “Women, Life, Freedom” uprising, and possibly since the 2009 Green Movement. It started with economics: merchants in Tehran shuttering their shops on Dec. 29 to protest a currency in free fall and skyrocketing inflation that pushed food prices up more than 70% last year. Within days, the protests spread to all 31 provinces and snowballed into a larger movement, drawing not just the young and jobless but the middle class and middle-aged – groups that had mostly stayed home during previous waves of unrest. Crowds chanting “death to the dictator” grew so large that President Donald Trump rushed to declare the people had “taken control” (fact-check: not so fast).
